NATO’s top military commander is working on a strategy for achieving a quick victory against a Russian attack on its eastern flank, with a particular focus on integrating new defense technologies like drones and AI into traditional power.

Estonia is preparing to deploy weapons capable of striking the Russian city of St. Petersburg, the Financial Times has reported.

Amid unprecedented mis- and dis-information from NATO’s European members, Tallinn has presented the proposed buildup as a form of deterrence, should Moscow “test” NATO. However, Russia’s leadership has repeatedly stressed that it has no intention of attacking the US-led military bloc. Moscow has also warned that any direct conflict with NATO would likely escalate into nuclear war.

President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday the world was living through a dangerous moment and warned the West not to escalate a standoff over Ukraine by threatening the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, which Moscow has made clear it would defend with ‌nuclear weapons if necessary.

Locked in a war in Ukraine which he said Russia had no choice but to launch in order to safeguard its ‌own security, Putin said Russia had no plans to attack any European country and wanted to coexist peacefully.

BRUSSELS, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Russia has warned NATO it would be ready to resort to nuclear weapons if the Western alliance attempted ​to cut off Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave that borders the Baltic Sea.

In a document sent to NATO and seen by Reuters, Moscow accused the alliance of ‌a "dangerous and reckless course" that entailed "high risks of the outbreak of a direct armed conflict".

Soldiers with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, will deploy to Lithuania as the U.S. continues its military presence on NATO’s eastern flank, Maj. Montrell Russell, an Army spokesman, told Task & Purpose.

They will be replacing the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, according to an August news release that previously announced the routine deployment.

In March, Norway’s defense minister Tore O. Sandvik made an unusually confident claim that “we don’t lose those submarines,” when describing NATO’s ability to track Russian submarines leaving the Kola Peninsula around the clock. A few sentences later, he extended that confidence to NATO’s entire northern flank, arguing that Britain, the United States, France, and Germany all depend on maintaining continuous custody of those boats.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch told voters that intelligence shows Russia could attack the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as soon as 2030. She said, “Conflict is coming,” and urged the United Kingdom to raise defence spending to 3% of national income by 2030 to meet the threat. Her remarks placed a clear date on risk and a clear target on funding. They also framed the debate as readiness now versus delay later, with lives and freedom on the line.

On the OECD's yardstick - defense R&D budget allocations per $1,000 of GDP - the United States spends $3.64. The next country on the list, South Korea, spends $2.06, and nobody else clears a dollar.

Britain is third at $0.97, Germany fourth at $0.79, France fifth at $0.50. The average across the 20 countries ranked is $0.58; the median is $0.27. Greece, at the bottom, spends nine cents.

The gap is about to get wider: the Department of War's request for fiscal 2027 is $1.5 trillion, 42% above this year's funding.
