'Aunty' Jacinda Ardern says Auckland in level 3 at midday; NZ in level 2 | WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

'Aunty' Jacinda Ardern says Auckland in level 3 at midday; NZ in level 2

Aucklanders are scrambling to prepare for the looming level 3 lockdown from midday today, with lengthy queues forming outside supermarkets and Covid-19 testing centres.

Police road blocks will be set up at entrances to the Auckland region.

The Government indicated this morning that it could seek a legal notice requiring mandatory mask use for anyone out in public in Auckland.

However Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern later clarified that masks would not be mandatory. Instead she "strong encouraged" everyone to wear a mask, scarf or bandana to cover their face.

The possibility of making masks mandatory would be considered at a later date.
